Planned Webinars for 2017 (dates to be confirmed)

Homeopathy and your dog

Homeopathy has been used for a great many years to treat both people and animals. This session will look at the principles of homeopathy as well as looking at how the polycrests may be used to treat animals and people. The polycrests can be used to provide first aid treatment for your dog (and yourself). For example, Arnica is fabulous for sprains, bites, other injuries and shock. Calendula promotes healing in wounds (not for puncture wounds though) and Ignatia can be used to help and animal (or person) through the greiving process
.

Food reinforcement - uses and misuses
Food is a very effective training tool, but can also end up hindering training if it is not used effectively. Too many people end up with dogs that cannot work unless their owner has food in their hand. Learn how to use food effectively in your training and how to avoid the pitfalls.

Teaching Self-control and Focus

Understanding dog food labels

Protein and its influences on behaviour
Protein is often misunderstood and often blamed for behaviour problems in dogs. Do high protein levels cause hyperactivity or aggression? How can we tell a 'good' protein source from a 'poor' one? Can different foods with the same protein content affect dogs in different ways?

Dietary influences on aggression
There are various components of a dog's diet that might affect its behaviour. Lowering protein levels is often suggesting for dogs with problems, but is this the full answer? Fats, additives and colorants may also be involved in problem behaviour. A diet deficient in certain fats has been linked to aggressive behaviour.

Therapeutic nutrition
There are many supplements that are 'missing' from dog foods or that are needed in greater quantities when a dog is challenged by ill health. Some of these supplements are generally regarded as safe and any excess that the dog doesn't require will leave the body. This session will look at supplements that may help our dogs, and list some that may help the elderly dog, the arthritic dog etc. Please consult with your vet before using some of these supplements as I am not a vet and can only make suggestions.

How to get the best out of your dog training
Learn how to make your training more successful and more efficient. Effective planning and using the correct reinforcement rate makes it much easier for your dog to learn, and makes it easier to avoid errors creeping in. Breaking behaviours down into small criteria makes it much easier for your dog to learn as well as keeping motivation and enthusiasm high for both dog and handler. Discover how to evaluate your training, when to move onto the next step, when to stay at the same criterion and when to move back a half step.

Allocation of Time and Effort in Behaviour
When dealing with behaviour cases, it is important that the canine behaviour advisor doesn't waste time and effort trying to change things that won't have a great deal of impact on a case. There is no point wasting 2 hours trying to change an owner's ideas on dominance if you can word the plan so that dominance theory is ignored/irrelevant. Energy and time should be conserved and used for those things that you can changes such as exercise regimes, training, etc.

Puppy socialisation throughout the development stages

Puppies require the right stimulation at the right ages to ensure that they develop into the best possible adults. Breeders have a crucial role to play in the first eight weeks of a puppy's life and many have recognised the importance of beginning the socialisation process prior to four weeks of age. There are experiences that puppies benefit from as soon as they are born. Likewise, puppy owners need to realise that socialisation doesn't stop at 14 weeks and needs to continue until the pup is much older.
